lakewood Central Church (레이크우드 중앙교회)

Lakewood Central Church (LCC) is a religious movement originating as an offshoot of the Salvation Sect (Guwonpa). Founded and led by Peter Yoon (also known by his Korean names Yoon Bang-mu or Yoon Chang-seok), the group is headquartered in Lakewood, California, and operates affiliate churches and fellowship groups in South Korea and Germany.  

In South Korea, the organization is officially registered as the Christian Central Mission (사단법인 기독교중앙선교회). Regional branches operate under names combining the region with "Central Church" or "LCC Mission Center".  

Despite sharing a geographically similar name, Lakewood Central Church is unrelated to Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, pastored by Joel Osteen.

Leadership

The church is led by Peter Yoon. Official biographical information regarding his background before founding the organization is unavailable. Yoon initially began holding evangelistic meetings and planting churches on the East Coast of the United States, including New York, before establishing the organization's current headquarters in Lakewood, California. He oversees global congregations and retreats. 

Yoon has authored several books and collections of sermons distributed primarily among church adherents. His published works include The True Purpose of Life (참된 삶의 목적), The Blessing of My Life (내 삶의 축복), The Most Precious Treasure (가장 귀한 보화), and A Fruitful Life of Faith (열매 맺는 신앙생활).  

Network and Membership

The organization operates internationally across North America, Asia, and Europe:

- United States: 3 locations in Los Angeles (HQ), Virginia, and New Jersey.  

- South Korea: 15 branch churches and 2 fellowship groups operating across major cities and regions, including Seoul, Daejeon, Bucheon, Gwangju, Busan, Cheongju, Cheonan, Wando (Bogildo), Seosan, Yeoju, Suwon, Geumsan, Jeju, Daegu, Goyang (Ilsan), Yongin, and Jeonju.  

- Europe: 1 fellowship group in Germany.  

The membership remains small-scale. The main headquarters in Lakewood, California, maintains a congregation of approximately 100 individuals. Most branch locations in South Korea consist of around ten members or one to two families.  

Governance and Operations

Structure

The organization operates under a single-leader structure centered on Peter Yoon. The church does not employ associate pastors or secondary clergy. Regional branches conduct Sunday services primarily by broadcasting video recordings of Yoon's sermons produced at the California headquarters.  

Appointments

While the church uses traditional ecclesiastical titles such as elder (jangno), senior deaconess (kwonsa), and deacon (jipsa), positions are not determined through denominational procedures or congregational votes. Officers are appointed through formal confirmation following nominations by Yoon and a small group of close associates. Appointed officers hold nominal positions with limited administrative authority, while internal operations are directed by individuals close to the lead pastor.  

Retreats

The group conducts four regular retreats annually:

- January: Winter Retreat (Los Angeles)  

- April: Spring Retreat (South Korea)  

- July: Summer Retreat (Los Angeles)  

- October: Fall Retreat (U.S. East Coast)  

These retreats focus on evangelism and reaffirming salvation doctrines through lecture series delivered exclusively by Yoon.

Mainstream Christian denominations and religious research media, such as Modern Religion (Hyundai Jongkyo), state that Lakewood Central Church incorporates core doctrines of the Salvation Sect (Guwonpa). Key elements reported in its teachings include:  

- Specific Moment of Salvation: Emphasizing a specific time, date, or realization point of salvation. 

- View on Repentance: Rejecting the concept of daily repentance for sins post-salvation, focusing instead on one-time salvation and confession.  

- Dualistic View of Spirit and Body: Explaining post-salvation sin through a dualistic distinction where the spirit is saved while the flesh commits sin.  

- Eschatological Focus: Incorporating themes of the end times, the Rapture, and apocalyptic warnings within sermons and literature.  

Sexual Harassment Allegations and Investigations

Reports from religious media indicate that complaints have been filed with law enforcement agencies in both South Korea and the United States alleging sexual harassment by Peter Yoon against female members.  

Accusers from retreats in South Korea and U.S. congregations reported forced physical contact during personal counseling sessions, releasing KakaoTalk message logs and police incident report documentation. Media reports note internal friction following the allegations, including secondary victimization of former members who subsequently departed the organization. Additionally, past internal controversies involving the personal lives of leadership figures, including an adultery incident involving a former associate pastor, have been reported.
